Often time, when we think about exercise, our minds drift to the treadmill, planks, dumbbells, and other exercises in that line, neglecting simple exercises like walking or stretching.

You rarely think of walking because, in your head, you believe that the harder the exercise, the greater the impact on your body, which is not always true.

Walking is a great exercise since it gets your entire body working and involved. In this article, I share 10 health benefits of walking every day;

  1. Walking every day strengthens your joints, muscles, and bones

Walking ensures that your joints, muscles, and bones remain in perfect health. It increases bone density which is vital for keeping your bones strong.

Walking increases blood flow to tense areas such as muscles and joints. This keeps the muscles strong and joints lubricated.

It is also an excellent exercise for people with arthritis, the elderly, and those advised to do low strain exercises.

2. Improves your brain health

Walking has a positive impact on the way your brain works especially.

As we grow older, we are more likely to get diseases like dementia and other brain disorders.

Moving around regularly helps reduce the risk of dementia and helps reverse the effects of aging. It enhances the part of the brain responsible for memory and learning.

Walking in patterns and backward can also improve your cognition even more.

3. Walking every day reduces the risk of heart complications

According to The Heart Foundation, walking 30 minutes or more a day reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke by 35%. Walking improves blood circulation by increasing your heart rate. This gets the blood pumping around your system.

When this happens, blood pressure is lowered, and there are minimal chances of getting heart diseases and complications.

Walking ensures that your heart remains strong.

4. It boosts energy levels

If you’ve been looking for something to give you an energy boost at the start of your day or at any point during the day, try walking.

You don’t have to do much. Go up and down a flight of stairs three times and you’ll be good to go.

Walking increases the flow of oxygen in your body. It also increases the production of hormones such as cortisol and epinephrine which help to elevate energy levels.

5. It can help with weight loss

Walking has been proven to help with weight loss. Walking can increase your metabolism by increasing your muscle mass.

Once your metabolism increases, you can burn more calories and hence lose weight.

You can ensure that you burn more calories by focusing on things such as; walking speed, the distance you walk, and terrain.

Walking improves your body’s response to insulin and this can help you burn belly fat.

6. Reduces blood sugar levels

Taking a walk, especially two hours after a meal, can help to lower blood glucose.

Adopting this practice can be quite helpful to people with diabetes and those who are predisposed to diabetes.

Remember that, the longer the walk, the better.

7. It brightens your mood

Walking reduces stress levels and improves your mood.

Being active reduces anxiety, depression and improves your nervous system so that you will experience a decrease in anger and hostility.

Nature walks enhance your mood, so look for areas with a lot of green scenery.

8. It improves your immunity

Walking every day increases your immunity and hence protects your body from different illnesses.

It increases your immunity against colds and flu, as well reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes and cancer through the constant exercise it provides

9. It helps with creative thinking

Walking is a good way to get ideas flowing in case you feel stuck. It clears your head and helps you think more creatively.

As you enjoy a walk, you’ll become more productive, and healthier from the physical exercise.

10. Walking helps you to sleep better

Walking is a good remedy for people with sleeping problems. According to Psychology Today, walking leads to significantly better sleep in people who walk regularly than those who don’t.

It keeps your body active and can be a good way to relieve stress and pain which helps you to sleep better.

Exercising and keeping active will help you sleep better at night, and lucky for you, walking is the perfect exercise for you.

Conclusion

One thing is clear, you need to walk. It’s free, easy, and has a ton of health benefits, I hope the reasons above will get you thinking about making time for walking every day.
